ABOUT DAWN JAMES | Dawn started PublishandPromote.ca in 2011 about a year after her journey of becoming a published author. During her first year as an author, she had the pleasure of being interviewed on over 95 shows, successfully secured global book distribution and released 3 print runs in 12 months.
Hundreds of people approached her asking how did you did it. That’s when she realized there was a void to fill in the publishing industry to educate aspiring authors about the ‘business’ of publishing and promoting in order to be successful. ABOUT WSBN | Marg Newsome and Sandra Valks, co-founders, began the Women’s Small Business Network in Quinte & Prince Edward County soon after Marg took up residence in Carrying Place in 2003. WSBN is modelled after RWBN (Rural Women’s Business Network) which Marg co-founded and is still operating in rural Osgoode Ward (formerly Osgoode Township prior to amalgamation with the City of Ottawa). The success of RWBN indicates that there is a requirement for regular networking meetings for business women, no matter where they are.
WSBN holds quarterly dinner meetings in various locations throughout their coverage areas of Quinte West, the County and Belleville. The network dinners typically attract about 50-60 women who run small businesses. Women entrepreneurs-to-be often attend the dinner meetings to chat with their future mentors to gain insight into the pros and cons of running a successful entrepreneur operation. WSBN’s mandate is to help women promote their businesses through networking, the sharing of ideas and resources and to support new and potential women entrepreneurs.
Doorprizes are a very positive element of the business dinners. The business person who donates a doorprize for the evening has the opportunity to tell the group about their business. This tends to be quite a delightful experience for most. They get lots of help from the audience, if they are feeling a bit nervous, as they are asked questions about their business and this tends to make people feel quite relaxed.
ABOUT MARG NEWSOME | After being employed by CN Rail in Montreal for 15 years and leaving to move to Ottawa, I decided that being an entrepreneur would be my career change and challenge. With that, I joined Women & Rural Economic Development as a Program Co-ordinator and Mentor. From there came the challenge to start a Women’s Small Business Network with a partner and under the auspices of WRED. The Rural Women’s Business Network was born and continued until 2005. We are now doing lunch meetings which are held in the Ottawa Region once a year.
Subsequently, a move to Trenton in 2003 and I met Sandra Valks at a Women’s Business Dinner meeting. During that meeting, it was determined that someone should volunteer to lead the next meeting in January 2004. I volunteered to do the next meeting with Sandra also volunteering and so began what became Women’s Small Business Network, Belleville, and Quinte West.
Today, after 12 years leading the WSBN Evening Dinner Meetings four times a year (and still very successful) I am happy to say that the experience has been a wonderful part of my growth as a person and I am very enthusiastic about the continuance of this experience. I wish to thank Sandra and all the ladies who have supported WSBN in these years and know that if we have helped them even a little, our job has been fulfilled!
